Due to its geographical position, Argentina is an important supplier of citric fruits for United States and Europe during spring and summer of the northern hemisphere. Lately, lemon exportations have been pushed up by the development of new plantations, the renewal of old woodland, favorable weather conditions, and a relevant technological upgrade for production. Basically, there are two categories of lemon to be exported: category I (selected) and category II (commercial). In the last years, the sector has demanded more seeds and shoots. Frost Lisbon y Limoneira 8-A have been the most demanded varieties of lemon tree (75% of the overall demand), followed by Nuclear Genova and Frost Eureka.
Citrus activity has brought in the last years an important operative movement, being also pushed by the rise in the demand from the main markets of European Union and Russia. They should go after fresh lemon to replace the spanish lemon ice-cream that did not reach their markets in the year 2005, due to the freeze which affected the mediterranean region.
The Argentinean lemon is a high quality one, which is quite appreciated abroad. Anyway, given the current conditions in the international market, the packing and exporting companies have agreeded to limit the shipment of fruit abroad to keep up the profitability margins and the price of the product. That is the reason why it has been settled the commitment not to import fresh lemon size 180 in telescopic box of 18 kilos (39.68 pounds), or lemon size 150 in a telescopic box of 15 kilos (33.07 pounds), or smaller sizes, to countries from the EU , East Europe or Russia. The low-volume fruit may discredit the quality and have a negative impact on the weighed price for all the calibers.
